Every space tells a story. Architects have known this for millennia, and it became clear to billions of people during the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic. Built environments shape our perceptions, our memories, and our sense of space and time.
New software and creative tools are changing our ability to create, manipulate, and transform space, and artists can now approach architecture in ways never before possible. As digital realities become more intrinsic to our lives, how might our sense of architecture change? What constitutes place and structure in the language of bits, pixels, and screens?
In Elsewhere is a Negative Mirror, ten artists took on the possibilities and impossibilities of architecture conceived in a virtual context. Free of the laws of spacetime and concerns of utility, they could build with abandon: toying with scale and dimension, defying physics, or working with the properties of light and color.
For these artists, the physical world is one domain among countless others. By reevaluating basic assumptions about what architecture can be, they treated reality itself as a medium in which to build.
The exhibition was presented at the LA Art Show (January 19-23, 2022) and at Vellum LA, alongside an online auction with SuperRare.
