Vellum LA Features Leading XR Artist Nancy Baker Cahill at Infinity Festival
Vellum LA had the pleasure of showcasing the work of artist Nancy Baker Cahill at this year’s Infinity Festival, an emerging-tech focused festival featuring the latest innovations in AI, XR, gaming, music, film, and more.
The multi-day annual event, held in Los Angeles, brought together Hollywood’s finest storytelling talent with the innovative creators of cutting-edge technology. The festival featured an art and tech focused exhibition hall alongside back-to-back talks with industry-leading speakers and thought-provoking panel discussions exploring the workings of the metaverse and the newest technologies advancing Immersive experiences, art, media, and gaming.
For the festival’s fine art exhibition, Vellum LA showcased artworks from Baker Cahill’s Slipstream series. Guests fully immersed themselves in this hypnotizing series by exploring all the intricate details of the works up close. Thanks to the high quality LEDs of the Luma Canvas, the series appeared incredibly lifelike, pulsing and fluctuating in a way that made the art feel almost tactile. Baker Cahill’s Slipstream, which demanded a long odyssey of production involving physical sculpturing, 3D scanning, and CG animation, shows how technology can be used to create profound works that simultaneously challenge invented realities and inspire change.
Nancy Baker Cahill is a leading artist working with XR to create surreal and immersive artworks that encourage viewers to engage with the realities around them differently, inviting critical discussion surrounding embodied consciousness, selfhood, power, and hyperobjects. As an extension of her practice, she founded a free AR public art platform, the 4th Wall app. The app allows for an inclusive, collaborative reconsideration of site, time and space in relation to our own bodies. Accessibility, subversive creative expression, and a newly imagined presentation of public art are at the core of the app’s mission.
If you missed Baker Cahill’s series at Infinity Festival, selections from Slipstream will be on view at the digital billboard at Melrose & Spaulding until November 15th.
