As part of its #PeaceForUkraine initiative, Vellum LA showed works by artists raising funds for Ukrainians affected by the war on four digital billboards across Los Angeles.
No. 700 v.26 by Krista Kim and #83 from Mieke Marple's Medusa collection were part of the NFTUkraine collection organized by Kenny Schachter and David Cash, with all proceeds going to the official Ukrainian relief wallet.
Krista Kim's No. 700 v.26 is an algorithmic painting in 4K resolution made for large-screen display. Kim's work aims at a kind of digital Zen, using the light of our screens to create a moment of pause.
Mieke Marple's Medusa Collection is a set of 2,500 unique works based on her paintings of canonical Italian sculptures of Medusa made between 1545 and 1805. Marple began the series in 2019, drawn to Medusa's origin story as a victim rather than the slain monster she is usually remembered as. Each Medusa is generated by an algorithm combining analog and digital techniques. #83 was shown at 3rd and Mariposa.
We Pray For Peace by MBSJQ, shown at Melrose and Spaulding, was part of Parker Yiltch's Ukraine Relief Collection of 37 artists, with all proceeds going to humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees.
Nicolas Sassoon's SUNRISE, shown on the Wilshire Landing billboard, was released in 1,000 editions with all proceeds going to Ukrainian charities. Sassoon is a Franco-Canadian artist who uses early computer graphics to create pixelated forms and figures, moiré patterns, and architectural structures, drawn to the sculptural and pictorial qualities of the imagery and the poetic limits of the medium.
